What’s the Deal with Juicing Cannabis?
We’ve all heard of the juicing trend that has been building momentum for years. At this point, it’s 2017 and juicing fruits and veggies is pretty much mainstream. But carrot-beet-ginger-cannabis juice? What’s up with that? Does it taste good? Is it good for you? Does it get you high? Apparently juicing raw cannabis is all the rage, and we’ll tell you why.
Why Juice Cannabis?
Dr. William Courtney, an expert in using raw cannabis juice to treat patients, claims that it is the healthiest and most beneficial way to consume cannabis. He’s used raw cannabis juice to treat over 7,000 patients. In fact, he believes that cannabis should be viewed more like a vegetable than a medicine or drug. He believes cannabis is a necessary part of everyone’s diet. He goes as far as to claim that many of the illnesses that people are using cannabis to treat can actually be prevented through regular consumption of raw cannabis juice.
Juicing cannabis provides many of the same benefits as smoking or vaping cured cannabis. Raw cannabis juice can help with inflammation, immune disease, chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety, depression, and cellular regrowth. It simply does it at a much more potent, concentrated level.
The main difference between consuming raw cannabis juice versus consuming cured plant matter (smoking, vaping, or eating) lies in how many milligrams of beneficial cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, our bodies are able to absorb. When you smoke cannabis, it has been cured and heated, and our bodies are only able to absorb about 10 milligrams of cannabinoids at a time. When you consume raw cannabis that has not been cured or heated, our tolerance dramatically increases allowing our bodies to absorb 500-1000 milligrams at a time. This provides a much higher concentration of beneficial compounds and is the reason experts say we walk away from 99% of the benefits of the plant when we smoke it.
Does Juicing Cannabis Get You High?
The simple answer is no, juicing raw cannabis does not get you high. This is because THCA, a compound present in raw cannabis, is never converted to THC, the compound in cannabis that produces a psychoactive effect. THCA must be heated, or decarboxylated, to be converted to THC and cause psychoactive effects. Using raw cannabis freshly cut from the plant means it is never heated and the THCA is never converted to THC. Further, CBDA is never converted into CBD. While CBD is not a psychoactive cannabinoid, both THCA and CBDA are full of medicinal properties and nutrients that our bodies never have access to via today’s commonly used consumption methods.
How Do You Juice Cannabis?
Cured, dispensary-bought cannabis will NOT work for juicing. As with juicing any other fruit or vegetable, the fresher the better. Use leaves and buds from full-season, ready-to-harvest plants. This means finding your source material can be tricky unless you grow or have a friend that does. Your best bet is going straight to the cultivator for fresh leaves and buds.
Start with 15 full sized leaves and 2 large buds. Pure cannabis juice is incredibly bitter and acidic, so it’s recommended to blend it with other fresh juices to make it more palatable. One part cannabis juice to 10 parts carrot juice is a good place to start.
